Necessary Legal Information for a Colorado Family Law Case
Educate yourself about the basic legal issues and the legal process, so that it is more likely that everyone in your family will benefit from a good conclusion to your family law case.
Because of years of experience with all of the family law members in your case,
you have much more knowledge about the facts of your case than anyone working on the legal aspects of your case. Learn what is important and what is not important.
Since it is unlikely that you can convey all of the facts which you know to your attorney, to a mediator, or the judge, it will benefit you to know what is important and what is not important.
Therefore, you should understand the basic issues such as co-parenting, support, payment of debt, the division of all types of property, taxes, and dispute resolution. A basic understanding of the relevant issues will help you to understand which facts are the most important.
I suggest that you use several sources to gather information, such as:
1. The internet, by using the search engines, primarily to visit law firm web sites;
2. Free information provided by the Colorado courts - some give free seminars;
3. Phone call to attorneys - most will take a question or two over the phone;
4. Free initial conferences with attorneys, perhaps at least three (don’t pay for an initial conference, since both you and the attorney are evaluating each other to determine a good fit and it is a marketing opportunity for the attorney);
5. Law firm question and answer forums which appear on the web, since they are designed to answer general questions; and
6. Seminars conducted by practicing attorneys - since this is a good opportunity to ask questions and evaluate an attorney.
Do not seek legal information from anyone who is not a licensed Colorado attorney.
You should visit our web site to check on our seminar schedule. The seminars are held in our office, in a large meeting room which seats about 30 people. There is no charge or obligation for the seminars or an initial attorney meeting.
